Choctaw paintings

Choctaw paintings

These paintings were started when I was working on my MFA.  They were apart of my masters project.  I wanted to learn more about my tribe -Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.  I went with a group to Oklahoma during their Labor Day gathering.  I photographed and asked as many questions as I could.  After returning I evaluated my photos and put together 7 large format paintings.  I have added to them. and I have sold some.

Whether you are decorating a luxury home or redecorating a spare bedroom these paintings would look well.  They are small format -- most are 18" X 24" or less.

Some of these paintings are painted with palette knives of various sizes.  I desired to use thicker paint and thought this would help me.  I found that I really enjoyed using palette knife and do most of my painting with them.

Seascapes

Seascapes

I grew up near the ocean and it is one of my favorite subject to paint.  I lived within walking distance to the beach.  I would go every chance I had during the summer.  Since I live in the Midwest painting a seascape is from a photograph and it can transport me to that day.  If I am working on a painting which is giving we trouble, I'll stop and work on a seascape and then I will be ready to go back to the original painting.

Still Life and floral

Still Life and floral

Still life paintings usually get started in the winter.  It is because Nature is my muse.  So bringing the outside in becomes a still life.  I turn on lights to help me get a feel of being outside.

oils on Acrylic pouring

oils on Acrylic pouring

These paintings are painted with oils over an acrylic pouring background.  I usually have an idea for the painting before I start the acrylic poured background.  There many techniques of pouring and I try to choose one that suits the idea I have.  Then I make a drawing on tracing paper the size desired.  The acrylic background does give much chance of a redo.

Figurative

Figurative

Every once in a while I pick up a brush to paint.  It usually the figure when I do.  It just seems to fit the subject matter.  Children are a delight to paint.  Always on the go and exploring, just adventurous. Because of their spontaneity the painting style can take on the same feel.
